This is Australia’s first children’s book. Published in Sydney in 1841, A Mother’s Offering to Her Children takes the form of an educational dialogue between a mother and her children – a very different format to contemporary children’s books. For many years, its author was not known beyond the fact she was a “Lady, long resident in New South Wales”. In 1980, bibliographer Marcie Muir identified Charlotte Waring Atkinson (also known as Charlotte Barton) as the author. The National Library of Australia holds Muir’s papers and collection of Australian children’s books, in Canberra.
